Rest in Peace, Kim Cameron
Kim Cameron, the Father of Modern Identity, has greatly influenced the way we think about digital identity and privacy today. We were saddened to hear that Kim passed away on November 30th, 2021 after a brave battle with cancer. One of Kim’s greatest achievements in the identity world were his 7 Laws of Identity, which he wrote about in 2005.
These 7 Laws are:
- User Control and Consent
- Minimal Disclosure for a Constrained Use
- Justifiable Parties
- Directed Identity
- Pluralism of Operators and Technologies
- Human Integration
- Consistent Experiences Across Contexts
When Kim wrote these laws, he was the Chief Architect of Identity at Microsoft. After implementing his laws, Kim transformed Microsoft into a privacy driven and forward-thinking company. Under Kim, Microsoft became a contributor to the Identity Standards Community that is respectful to the rights of both individuals and organizations. During his final two years at Microsoft, Kim supported Decentralized Identity for its balance of privacy and security.
We are grateful for Kim’s contributions to the digital identity and privacy world and we hope to honor his legacy by striving to live by the ideals that he expressed in his 7 Laws of Identity.
